Why I Love Greek Yogurt

by GfG on February 23, 2012

If you’ve been here for any amount of time, you know I have a thing for ice cream.  A real thing.  A serious thing.  I am also known for an addiction to Culver’s frozen custard.  Mmmm.  Well, I have a new love that’s trying to take numero uno in my palate preference.

I shared a few months ago that I was making some changes to my diet.  Because more than four months have passed, I feel like I have actually made the change to my way of eating, not just tried it.  I don’t juice as much anymore, but I do once a week.  The main change to my diet has been to practically eliminate breads, increase fruits and vegetables, pare significantly down on the amount of meat and cut my portion sizes.  I have lost fifteen pounds and kept it off.

Notice I did not say eliminate sugar.  I just can’t (won’t?) do that.  I’m a junkie.  That being said, I have changed the amount of sugar I eat and I choose wisely what wins in my sugar intake.  It’s not always a healthy win, but I have cut down on the amount of sugar and I no longer eat everything sweet thing offered me.

Ok… so… that’s the intro to sharing with you something that has entered my life at just the right time AND has climbed to the top of the healthy list as well as the sweet substitute list.  How awesome is that?  Pretty stinkin’ awesome.

Here she is:

Yup, Greek yogurt.

Did you know that Greek yogurt has twice as much protein as regular yogurt and half as much carb content?  You do now.

The first time I had Greek yogurt, the “bite” was a bit too much for me.  I wasn’t used to the sharpness of it.  I gave it another try with a fruit flavor.  That’s all it took.

The honey flavored sends me into flavor blissdom!  Seriously.

Here’s why I’ve become a fan of Greek yogurt:

1) Good protein intake

2) Healthy carbs

3) Smooth thick texture, much like ice cream

4) Rich and strong flavor

5) Probiotics are always a good thing

6) Can keep it on hand with little effort since it keeps for a good amount of time

While I still love my Culver’s, I have found something I love just as much (the one above!) as is much better for me.  Yea!

Whodathunkit?  I’m sure the staff at Culver’s is wondering if I’ve moved or died or something.  That’s a good thing.    ;-)

Have you had Greek yogurt?  What’s your favorite flavor?

I have been having major pregnancy-related ice cream cravings. I have also not been as fortunate as I was in my first three pregnancies in regard to weight gain ;D With the first three, I basically ate whatever I desired in whatever portions ( we tend to be healthy eaters) and still gained a reasonable, low amount of weight…..
So I have been feeding my ice cream desires by making a sort of green smoothie blender ice cream concotion with Greek yogurt.
I get Fage, plain yogurt, so I can use it in all sorts of things. For the smoothie, I take about a cup of Kale or spinach, blend it up with just enough milk to get it totally pureed. Then I add frozen strawberries and about a cup of Greek yogurt and tablespoon of cocoa powder. This is my nighttime craving trick, and while it seems to be helping with the iron levels ( the iron vitamin c combo)….I can’t say it is helping with the weight, but i can only imagine how it would be with REAL ice cream :D

That’s awesome Sis! I am so proud of you for your change in eating habits and LOSING 15 POUNDS! HOLY COW! Since that’s like 1/7 of your entire weight! WOWZERS! That’s a lot!
I actually love the honey flavored greek yogurt too and since I don’t even like yogurt much, I was surprised. I DO like to add some all natural jam on top….I have a cherry/raspberry/pomegranate combo I like. I don’t eat it often enough though and I should, especially to give me a protein AND dairy serving. So, thanks for the reminder. Problem for me is that I have to make myself do it. I almost never crave sweets…spicy/salty is my weakness.
Again, I am super impressed, encouraged, and motivated by you! (as always with so many things about you!)

love you!
