Independence Day has been one of my favorite party days: friends, family, food, fireworks. We’ll be doing this a little differently this year, but we’re going to have a blast!
I wanted to share some ideas for you to consider doing with your kiddos or for a party. As usual, my suggestions are on the easy side. Just how I like them.
Flaunt the Flag: I have found that having some simple 4th of July decorations are easy to put up and really add to the atmosphere (I have just one box, but it sure adds a lot of bang!). I bought most of mine at Oriental Trader years ago, but you can buy some flags from your favorite store and proudly display them around the house. Give them to the kids to wave. Stick them in your potted plants. Whatever. The more, the merrier.

All American Chocolate Covered Strawberries: Seriously! Yummo! I can not wait to do these. I think I will actually let the older kiddos make them. I know they will be a hit.

Red, White and Blue Pretzel Sticks: Most people love a salty/sweet combo and I think this one is sure to please. Even messy, it will look cute and be delicious (This little treat will be made by the six and nine year olds. Their father can hardly wait.) and also a terrific photo opp.

Patriotic Ice Cream Sandwiches: Who doesn’t love ice cream? Again, just adding sprinkles is a terrific chance to let your kiddos in the kitchen and be a part of the festivities. Always a good thing.

Crazy Lady Liberty Crowns: My kids are going to love doing this! They have quite a thing for duct tape, so this is right up their alley. We are editing the craft a bit and not doing any gluing, therefore allowing the crowns to be worn immediately. Since all you have to do after making the duct tape band is fill the straws with twisted pipe cleaners means everyone can do this one on their own. If you wanted to take these to a party, you could pre-make all the bands with straws. Let the kids add the rest after you get to the party. Personalized silliness. Perfect.

4th of July Berry Bowl: I saw the above photo and thought, “How easy and healthy!” If you wanted to add some yogurt covered fruit instead of the whipped cream, that would be fun too. The treat would have all three patriotic colors and still be a healthy option at your table. We are definitely doing this, but with smaller cups for everyone.
Wear Red, White and Blue: I know this sounds silly, but it really is fun. It’s also easy. Every store on or around the corner is selling patriotic digs. Most are pretty inexpensive. Pick one you like. I used to buy the Old Navy tees, but now I like it when we just all wear the colors in different ways. Oh, and don’t forget the family photo tradition. My kids love it.
No matter if you celebrate with a crowd or just with your precious ones, take a little bit of time to make some red, white and blue fun for the family on the fourth.
What are you doing this year for Independence Day?
